Everything You Need to Know About Vehicle Striping + 7 Examples

Classic Mustang Racing Stripes by Grafics Unlimited

If you’re reading this, odds are you’re considering vehicle striping–a versatile and impactful way to transform the look of a car, truck, or fleet. Whether you’re in the market for subtle pinstripes that add elegance to your vehicle or bold racing stripes that scream speed, striping serves both aesthetic and functional purposes. As a car enthusiast, a small business owner, or simply someone looking to refresh the look of your vehicle, understanding the basics of striping is essential.

In this guide, we’ll cover what vehicle striping is, the different types available, the pros and cons of each method, and share eight inspiring examples to help you choose your next look.

What Is Vehicle Striping?

Vehicle striping is the process of applying vinyl or paint to a vehicle’s surface in thin lines, graphics, or patterns. It can be purely decorative, create a sporty vibe, or serve branding purposes for business fleets. Modern striping often uses vinyl decals, which are durable, cost-effective, and easier to replace than painted stripes.

Types of Vehicle Striping

1. Pinstriping

Thin, subtle lines that add a touch of class and detail to a vehicle. Pinstripes are often used on luxury cars, classic models, and custom paint jobs.

2. Racing Stripes

Thicker stripes (usually two parallel lines) that run from the front to the back of the vehicle. Popular on muscle cars and sports cars, they emphasize speed and power. Two iconic vehicles that feature these types of stripes include the Shelby Mustang GT350 and the Dodge Viper.

3. Vinyl Striping

Using vinyl stripes instead of paint offers several benefits, including durability, cost-effectiveness, and the ability to remove them when you’re ready for something new. Additionally, vinyl striping offers greater design flexibility, making this option ideal for businesses that use striping in their fleet branding.

4. Custom Painted Stripes

Traditional and long-lasting, painted stripes are more permanent than vinyl and a good option for someone looking to create a more traditional custom look. They’re typically more expensive but ideal for classic show cars.

5. Reflective Striping

Often used for safety on emergency vehicles, tow trucks, or utility fleets. Reflective stripes increase nighttime visibility.

Choosing the Right Shop for Installation

Selecting a reputable shop for your vehicle striping is just as important as the design itself. Look for installers who specialize in vehicle striping, and ask to see a portfolio of past work. A good shop will use high-quality materials, offer warranties, and have a controlled environment for application to prevent bubbles or peeling.

Additionally, it’s a good idea to read reviews, request quotes, and don’t be afraid to ask questions about the process and aftercare. The right installer ensures your stripes not only look sharp on day one but also hold up against weather, washing, and daily wear.
