The Ultimate Checklist for Hiring a Car Wrap or Sign Shop

Car wrap job by Grafics Unlimited

If you’re looking to make a statement with your vehicle, whether it’s for business promotion or personal flair, wrapping your car is a smart choice. But finding the right car wrap or sign shop can be daunting, especially with so many options out there. Don’t worry—we’ve got you covered! This ultimate checklist will ensure you find the perfect shop to transform your vehicle into a rolling piece of art.

Understanding the Basics of Car Wraps and Custom Signage

Before you start calling shops, it’s essential to have a basic understanding of what a car wrap or custom signage involves. A vehicle wrap is a large vinyl graphic or decal applied directly over the original paint of the vehicle. It allows for complete color change and branding opportunities. Sign shops also offer services like spot graphics, magnetic signs, vinyl banners, and custom signage. Now that you know the basics, knowing the right questions to ask will help you evaluate what you need. Here are the next steps in building a checklist to help you find the perfect vehicle wrap or sign shop:

1. Research and Shortlist

A preliminary internet search can help you understand all of your options and, based on the following criteria, narrow those options down to a shortlist of viable shops. Local shops will be most convenient, but when investing in something like a car wrap, or perhaps when creating spot graphics for an entire fleet of vehicles, traveling a little ways outside of your local area to a reputable shop may be worth it. Alongside location, here are a few other qualifications to help you narrow down your list.

Credentials and Experience

  • Experience matters… a lot. Look for a shop with many years of experience and a large portfolio of past work. Experienced shops will have proven techniques and a track record of satisfied customers. Their vast portfolio will increase the odds they’ve worked on a project similar to yours, making their experience even more valuable. A great example is this shop in Northern Nevada with over 40 years of experience in car wraps and custom signage. A track record of that magnitude can only mean they’ve seen and done it all while leaving a legacy of happy customers along the way.
  • Certifications from recognized organizations in the wrapping industry can be a plus. It indicates that the technicians are trained in the latest techniques and materials.

Online Reviews and Testimonials

  • Read online reviews on platforms like Google, Yelp, or the Better Business Bureau. Pay attention to both positive and negative reviews to get a balanced view.
  • Testimonials on the shop’s website can provide insight but make sure to check for genuine customer feedback elsewhere. Asking around your local area can give you quick and valuable insight into the best shops (and the worst shops to steer clear of!)

2. Evaluate Quality of Materials

  • Quality is crucial. Ask about the brands they use (e.g., 3M, Avery Dennison). High-quality materials ensure durability and a better finish.
  • Inks and Printers should be industry-leading to ensure the vibrancy and longevity of the wrap’s colors.

3. Assess the Portfolio

  • A comprehensive portfolio will showcase the shop’s expertise and style. Look for diversity in car wrap or custom signage projects and consistency in quality. This shop’s portfolio of projects is displayed right on their website. More examples can be found on their social media profiles such as Facebook and Instagram.
  • Before-and-after photos can give you a clear idea of the transformation capabilities of the shop.

4. Request Quotes and Compare Pricing

  • Obtain detailed quotes from multiple shops to compare prices. Ensure that the quote includes all aspects of the process—design, installation, and aftercare. Be wary of prices that seem significantly lower than competitors. While cost-effective, they might cut corners on materials or labor. Also, a higher quote may not be the worst option. If the shop has a solid reputation and the quote is only slightly higher than the other worthy competitors, paying slightly more may be worth the final result as well as piece of mind.

5. Inspect the Facility

  • Visit the shop in person if possible. A clean and organized workshop indicates professionalism and attention to detail. If it’s too inconvenient to make an in-person visit, images of their technicians at work may be available online.
  • Observe other vehicles being worked on to gauge the quality of current projects.

6. Discuss Customization and Design Services

  • If you need bespoke graphics, ensure the shop offers custom design services. A good designer will help turn your vision into a reality.
  • Ask about the design process and how much input you will have. Clear communication is key to achieving the desired result. Make sure you’ll be able to see a mock up of your project and give feedback.

7. Understand the Installation Process

  • Inquire about the installation timeline and ensure it fits within your schedule. Quality work takes time, so be wary of shops promising unrealistically quick turnarounds.
  • Ask for details about the installation process to understand what to expect. Knowledgeable technicians will explain each step and care for your vehicle.

8. Warranty and Aftercare

  • A solid warranty on both materials and workmanship is essential. It reflects the shop’s confidence in their work.
  • Ask about aftercare services or tips for maintaining your wrap. Proper maintenance ensures longevity and keeps the wrap looking fresh.

Conclusion

Choosing the right car wrap or sign shop is a significant decision, whether you’re enhancing your brand or personalizing your ride. By following this checklist, small business owners, marketing professionals, and vehicle enthusiasts can find a shop that delivers quality and value.
